Throughout March, local foodies can earn points during the restaurant month challenge by visiting the establishments on the lineup.
Toast spokesperson Erin Williams told Patch about the restaurant’s standout Seasonal Mimosa Flights ($19) and the showstopping Lifesize Mimosa ($29). Among the must-try dishes are the savory chilaquiles with pork chile verde and the indulgent strawberry cheesecake pancakes.

Restaurant Month, a Taste of Murrieta and Wildomar, has begun, offering deals and opportunities to experience a variety of local cuisine at dozens of restaurants, cafes and bars.
Through March 31, participants will be able to earn points to win prizes as they explore different establishments in the dining scene of Southwest Riverside County.
Locals participating can upload photos of the meals they try — "foodie photos" — to the restaurant week's map, Proxi, to earn extra points in the challenge by using the #DineLocalSWRC.

RIVERSIDE, CA — As avian flu continues to spread among laying hens, livestock, and even humans, Riverside County residents may be wondering when relief will come as egg prices soar amid supply shortages.
Last week, four experts at the University of California, Riverside, discussed what residents should know about the worst bird flu outbreak in recent memory.
The university recently interviewed the following experts: Bruce Babcock, associate dean and professor of public policy with expertise in agricultural economics; Amy Murillo, assistant professor of veterinary entomology; Juliet Morrison, assistant professor of microbiology and plant pathology; and Michael Bates, assistant professor of economics.

The university faculty discussed high prices, when consumers may see relief and how farmers are faring in the war against the zoonotic outbreak.

Though farmers are deeply entrenched in the situation, households are likely only feeling it in their pocketbooks when facing sticker shock at the supermarket.
The average price per dozen was $4.10 at the end of 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Now, a dozen eggs at a local grocery could cost anywhere from $8 to $10.
Bates addressed the issue of families on a fixed income.
"Since other common sources of protein such as beef, pork, and poultry are generally more expensive, price increases to eggs can be particularly painful, and particularly so for low-earners who may rely more on them," he told the university.
Bates also noted that the price of eggs was rising before bird flu cases began spiking again last April.
"But the recent drastic rise in prices seems primarily driven by the outbreak," he said, noting that a similar but less drastic price surge happened with bird flu in January 2023.
Babcock says that egg prices have surged because the supply of eggs has dropped due to the severe outbreak. That's because the only way to slow the disease spread is to euthanize laying hens after an outbreak is detected at a production facility.

Since January 2024, more than 157 million chickens have been affected by bird flu, according to Murillo, who also noted that there is no treatment for the highly contagious bird flu.
"Infected chickens show signs of severe illness or death very quickly, and the current standard practice is to euthanize the entire flock if the virus is detected on a property," she said.
A farm also cannot bring back replacement chickens for at least a month after an outbreak is detected.
Going back to this issue of cost, Babcock says the egg supply was about 7 to 10 percent lower than it was expected to be without bird losses.
"Egg prices are highly sensitive to changes in supply," he said.
The United States Department of Agriculture reported that as of November of last year, stocking densities are down about 3 percent compared to the previous year — but chicken egg and meat demand is up, contributing further to high prices and shortages, Murrillo said.
In response to a question about how long it will be before supply is back to normal, Babcock said: "We will not return to normal unless bird flu recedes in nature or laying hens develop resistance to the disease."
If supply does return to "normal," Babcock says egg prices could drop by between 45 and 65 percent. Egg prices will begin to fall when facilities can replace "destroyed hens."
On the issue of human transmission, Morrison assured that there is little risk associated with handling raw eggs or chicken meat, but not zero.
"While it is unlikely that eggs from virus-infected flocks are making it to supermarket shelves, influenza viruses can transmit from infected hens to the shell and internal contents of their eggs," she said. "Cooking eggs until the yolks and whites are solid will kill any viruses present."
In terms of future solutions, the experts said that a combination of agricultural policy interventions, the development of a new vaccine and utilizing trade with other countries could mitigate the damage consumers and egg producers are feeling.

MURRIETA, CA —A Murrieta Valley Unified School District Counselor was named among the Riverside County Educators of the Year, according to the Riverside County Office of Education.
In a surprise visit to campus, Felipe Zanartu received his award for his role as a school counselor at Cole Canyon Elementary School.
"For the last six years, Felipe Zanartu is far more than an outstanding support for the success of all students. He also trains new counselors and facilitates professional development locally, statewide, and nationally to grow exemplary model counseling programs. His work has elevated the profession within his own district to the extent that counselors were added to support each elementary school in the district," a district spokesperson said in a recent news release.
"Felipe is a member of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and the California Association for School Counselors. His belief is that exemplary school counselors are those who prioritize measurable outcomes, equity, and student-centered growth. In just the last five years, Felipe has guided 18 schools to achieve Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) recognition in Riverside County, California, and across the country.
"He is a frequent presenter at the National School Counselor Leadership Conference and serves as a RAMP-reviewer for schools that are aligning their counseling focus with best practices and national standards.One of Felipe’s innovative creations is the House Challenge Program. This initiative encourages kindness, respect, good citizenship, teamwork, and sportsmanship through structured play via intramural sports competitions. For students who might not otherwise participate in competitive extra-curricular sports programs, this program builds confidence, social skills, and connections with their peers while teachers, staff, parents, and community members support as coaches and referees.

One parent described the program as “saving my child’s 5th grade year,” according to a statement.
Zanartu earned a Master’s degree in School Counseling from San Diego State University, and his Preliminary Administrative Services Credential from the Riverside County Office of Education’s School of Education.
Riverside County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Edwin Dr. Edwin Gomez, spoke about Zanartu at the recent surprise ceremony with more than 1,000 students and educators gathered at an outdoor assembly on the campus of Cole Canyon Elementary School.
“Today, I have a very special announcement because it is important that in this county, we honor, celebrate, and acknowledge our great educators and team members that work with all of you students,” Gomez said. “Mr Zanartu works for many of you. He's visible. He's on the playground. He's in the classroom. He's working with your teachers, and he's working with the team—all because he cares for every single one of you. Just like all of your teachers, and all of your staff members here in your educational family, Mr. Zanartu always goes above and beyond the call of duty.”
Zanartu described his thouths, immediately following the surprise announcement.
"This was incredibly unexpected,” he said. "My biggest thing is for all of you here is to really have fun. Make school the best experience it can be. I know if you have fun, and you love school, and make really good friends, and good relationships, you're going to be successful. MURRIETA, CA — Say farewell to the Santa Ana winds and hello to colder, wet winter weather through early next week. Humidity returns to the region throughout Friday and Saturday when rain and mountain snow are expected.
The National Weather Service placed the mountain areas under Winter Storm Watches: The San Bernardino County Mountains from Saturday evening through Tuesday morning and the Riverside County Mountains from Sunday morning through Tuesday morning.
“A return of onshore flow will spread higher coastal humidity inland beginning later today through the weekend. Stronger onshore flow will bring stronger and gusty southwest-to-west winds for the mountains and deserts for Saturday afternoon through Saturday night with gusts to 45 to 55 mph and isolated gusts to 70 mph," the NWS said.
"Not much has changed with the timing and track of the closed low-pressure system from the north for the weekend into early next week. The center of that closed upper-level low-pressure system is expected to move to near Point Conception late in the day on Sunday, then move slowly eastward across southern California on Monday.
There will be increasing chances for showers on Saturday night into Sunday. The snow level will fall to around 4500 feet on Saturday night and around 5000 feet on Sunday.

MURRIETA, CA—Murrieta's Famous PUDN has closed its doors, the owners announced in a recent social media post. Instead, they will sell to the public through farmer's markets and other fairs and possibly reopen another retail outlet in 2026.
Famous PUDN, a local staple from its 24520 Village Walk Place Unit F location, is now closed to the public.
"You will only be able to get our PUDN at outdoor events in a city or state near you," they wrote. "Our large event schedule has doubled this year, superseding the retail location. It doesn't make good business sense to do both this year."
Gift cards will be honored at outdoor events, or at their certified kitchen. You can still place catering orders online, they say. In the meantime, find them at:
The PUDN has earned numerous local awards and grants. They even served actress Renee Zellweger on Mother's Day in 2023, one of their claims to fame. Still, the plans for the business are ever-evolving, says owner EJ Smith III.

Raised in Gardena, Smith started making homemade PUDN in 2004, based on his mother's family recipe. His base recipe has only five ingredients, and the delicious baked dessert is Kosher Certified.
"We were blessed by a real Rabbi," he said. He set up shop in a former Long Beach deli and word got out quickly.
"I had lines around the street some days," he said. Even the mayor of Long Beach proclaimed that they were "putting smiles on people's faces" with a delicious dessert that everyone can relate to, regardless of family history or background. On track to do big business, appearing on television studio sets, MTV award greenrooms and more, his wife grew ill and needed surgery. Life took them away from California for several years.
It wasn't until 2015 that they moved to Temecula and during the pandemic decided that a family business may be just the way to both work with and leave a legacy for his son, EJ Smith IV.
Together, the Smith family came up with the mission statement and plan for the shop."My son worked out that PUDN stands for PUDN Unifies Diversity Nationwide," he said. They also still strive to carry on the tradition of putting smiles on people's faces every day, with the traditional banana pudding to the elaborate flavors and toppings each guest can build themselves.
"I coached him in football, and now I'm coaching him in business," he said. "We're working together and it feels good to be closer than ever, working together."
The store may be closed, but the business goes on under the new model. Be sure to watch social media for their next storefront, tentatively planned for 2026 in a "high-traffic location," Smith said.
"Thank all of you for loving us what we stand for, and what we do in our community. We look forward to seeing you and PUDN smiles on your faces."
