(CNN) — More than 700 Marines based out of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in California have been mobilized to respond to the protests in Los Angeles, according to three people familiar with the matter, and will join the thousands of National Guard troops who were activated by President Donald Trump over the weekend without the consent of California’s governor or LA’s mayor.

The deployment of the full Marine battalion marks a significant escalation in Trump’s use of the military as a show of force against protesters, but it is still unclear what their task will be once in LA, the sources said.

Like the National Guard troops, they are prohibited from conducting law enforcement activity such as making arrests unless Trump invokes the Insurrection Act, which permits the president to use the military to end an insurrection or rebellion of federal power.

US Northern Command said Sunday that 500 Marines from 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines were put on prepare to deploy orders, but one of the people familiar said Monday that the entire battalion was prepared to deploy and has been mobilized.

One of the people familiar with the Marine mobilization said they will be augmenting the guard presence on the ground in LA. Over 2,000 members of the California National Guard have been activated by the president, but only about 300 have been deployed to the streets of LA so far. Those initial 300 people were on a routine National Guard drill weekend when they were mobilized, which is why they were able to arrive so quickly, the person familiar said; it can take up to 72 hours for other guardsmen to be mobilized. The Marines are expected to bolster some of the guard members who have been deployed to LA in the last two days, this person said.

And while the person familiar stressed that the Marines were being deployed only to augment the forces already there, the image of US Marines mobilizing inside the United States will stand in contrast to National Guardsmen who more routinely respond to domestic issues. While some Marines have been assisting in border security at the southern border, one US official said Marines have not been mobilized within the US like they are in California now since the 1992 riots in Los Angeles.

While the Marines’ tasks have not been specified publicly, they could include assignments like crowd control or establishing perimeter security. Lawyers within the Defense Department are also still finalizing language around the use-of-force guidelines for the troops being mobilized, but the person familiar said it will likely mirror the military’s standing rules of the use of force.

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. (KESQ) - After Tuesday's downpour caused enough flooding, mud, and debris to make many area roads dangerous and impassable, the City of Twentynine Palms reported Friday evening that Adobe Road is now open, but down to one lane going north and south.

They say the city's Public Works crew will continue working hard to completely open Adobe Road by next week.

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. (KESQ) - A major road remains closed Wednesday after a storm brought flooding to Twentynine Palms.

As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, Adobe Road from Raymond Way to Amboy is closed all lane is all directions. City officials said there is between two feet to two and a half feet of standing water in the “Adobe Punchbowl.”

Indian Trail from Lear to Mesquite Springs is in an unknown condition.

The City's Public Works Crew is finishing up clearing debris off the following roads. While the roads are now passable, constituents still need to travel with caution:

At the Marine Corps Base (MCAGCC), the Condor and Main gates are open. Ocotillo Gate is open for inbound traffic only, pending the clearing of Morongo Road.

"We are operating on a late-start this morning, with non-essential personnel reporting at 0900 to keep the roads clear of traffic for the road crews," reads an update from the city.

Videos from residents on Tuesday around the area show flooding around the town, as well as hail.

News Channel 3 spoke with local drivers who jumped in to help neighbors stuck in the storm.

"I did several tonight for free. The CHP, says to go, we go," David Bailey said. "It's normally $250 an hour, but we're not getting paid today."

Lisa Nieves, Twentynine Palms resident, said the community comes together during situations like this. "We're just going to move on and look for another day tomorrow," Nieves said.

Approximately 700 Marines have been deployed to Los Angeles as a response to the ongoing protests there — despite strong opposition voiced by California politicians.

“Donald Trump’s decision to deploy Marines to Los Angeles is an astounding overreach of authoritarian power. The state of California has not requested the National Guard, much less the Marines, but Trump is sending them anyway,” said Democratic Rep. Mike Levin, who represents parts of San Diego and Orange County.

Levin sent a letter Monday morning to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth demanding answers regarding the potential deployment of Camp Pendleton troops.

Camp Pendleton is part of Levin’s district.

Levin expressed his disapproval of the activation of the Marines in the letter to Hegseth and in a statement following the deployment announcement. Levin explained that Marines are “trained to be lethal; they are not trained for law enforcement.”

“We deploy them in defense of our homeland and in support of our national interest; we do not put warfighters on the ground in American cities to repress civilians,” Levin wrote.

Levin asked for Trump to de-escalate the situation and return troops to their bases. This follows the lawsuit recently filed by California against Trump’s activation of the National Guard.

Troops were deployed to the area on Monday.

The Marines deployment follows the earlier federal deployment of roughly 2,000 California National Guard soldiers to the L.A. and surrounding areas.

On Sunday afternoon, United States Northern Command had confirmed that approximately 500 Marines from Twentynine Palms were “on standby” for protests against immigration raids in Los Angeles.

Protests began Friday in response to increased, violent immigration raids across the city. The protests continued through the weekend and are ongoing. As tensions grow, law enforcement has used tear gas, rubber bullets, and flash bangs against mostly peaceful protesters.

On Saturday night, the National Guard was placed under federal command by the Trump administration, and the first troops began to arrive Sunday morning.

Both Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass said at the time that they believed local law enforcement could handle the situation, and asked the president to not deploy the National Guard.

Despite their comments, the Trump administration deployed roughly 2,000 National Guard soldiers for 60 days. Currently, there are about 300 members of the National Guard on the ground in the greater Los Angeles area, including Compton and Paramount. The remainder of the troops are still to arrive.

The activation of the Marines is intended to provide Task Force 51 with more numbers, according to a press release from U.S. Northern Command.

Task Force 51 is the U.S. Army North’s Contingency Command Post that is rapidly deployable and has been trained in de-escalation and crowd control.

Prior to deployment, the Twentynine Palms Marines were in a “prepared to deploy status should they be necessary to augment and support the DoD’s protection of federal property and personnel efforts,” according to a release from U.S. Northern Command.

U.S. Northern Command would not offer any further comment on the deployment of the Marines.
